July 23, 2020
As a part of our federal engagement with both Republicans and Democrats, we reached out to elected officials sitting on both party platform committees to request inclusion of provisions favorable to TRIO programs. Yesterday, the DNC Platform Drafting Committee has released its draft Democratic Party Platform for 2020. The document calls for doubling the Federal TRIO Programs to help more vulnerable students complete college. This is the first time in history that either political party has formally included TRIO in its party platform.
The document (.pdf) states:
“We will double the maximum Pell Grant award for low-income students, and double federal support for TRIO programs that help first-generation college students, students with disabilities, veterans, and other underrepresented groups apply to and complete college” (p. 60).
Thanks to the TRIO community leaders in select states and districts who conducted outreach to both RNC and DNC platform drafters at each stage of the process.
Next week, the full DNC Platform Committee will vote to approve this draft and send it to the full Democratic National Convention for delegates’ approval in August in Milwaukee and online.
The TRIO community also conducted outreach to the Republican National Committee, which released its party platform document (.pdf) a few weeks ago.
