Academy Award-Winner Viola Davis Recalls TRIO Impact on Life and Career

September 19, 2018

On Saturday, September 15, 2018, the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) presented its first-ever TRIO Family Achievement Award to Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis along with her sisters, Dianne, Anita, and Deloris, as well as their mother, Mae Alice. All four sisters participated in Upward Bound and several went on to participate in Student Support Services as well. During the awards dinner, family members reflected on the impact of the TRIO programs on their lives. During her remarks, Viola Davis recounted how the Upward Bound staff were instrumental in not only helping her succeed academically and socially, but even paving the way for her to compete in a national competition for young artists. Recounting her experiences in TRIO, Viola Davis told the audience, "You don’t just reach for success, that’s what Upward Bound taught me... you reach for significance."
