COE and Chicago Area TRIO Gather for 3rd Annual Alumni Celebration and STEM Fair

October 26, 2016

More than 100 TRIO alumni gathered at the downtown campus of Loyola University Chicago, on October 14th, to mark the 3rd Annual TRIO Alumni Reception. TRIO attendees reconnected with former University of Illinois at Chicago Upward Bound counselor Theresa Powell, who introduced the keynote speaker, her program alumna Dr. Jennifer Dennis. Dr. Dennis, the Associate Dean of the Oregon State University Graduate School, told her story — both the ups and downs — explained why TRIO was important in her life, and how she carries that philosophy into her work as an Associate Dean. Dr. Dennis also noted her teary surprise upon finding out that Mrs. Powell was there to introduce her. It was a mini-reunion of the TRIO family and a commitment to support TRIO growth hosted by Roy Saldana, Jr., an Upward Bound and SSS alumnus from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and current director of Achieving College Excellence (SSS) at Loyola University Chicago. Check out the video recap here Video.

The next day, there was a multi-program STEM Fair in partnership with the Museum of Science and Industry. This year, nearly 300 TRIO students from more than 10 programs in Greater Chicago and other areas of Illinois gathered to engage in a variety of STEM-based activities including hands-on STEM activities, career and college information for students interested in pursuing STEM, and time to meet with a number of college access professionals who were available to answer students' questions. The Science Works program included over 40 businesses-such as GE Transportation, RIC Center for Bionic Medicine, and Fermi Lab-that provided science displays, activities, and recruitment efforts.

Participating institutions included BUILD, the College of Lake County, DePaul University, the Family Centered Education Agency, Introspect Youth Services, Inc., Loyola University Chicago, Moraine Valley Committee College, Robert Morris College, Roosevelt University, Southern Illinois University, and the University of Illinois, Chicago, to name a few. Combined, those programs and others in the Chicagoland area serve over 15,000 students each year.
