On Monday evening, the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (“LHHS”) Appropriations released its FY 2020 bill in advance of Tuesday afternoon’s “markup” of the bill. The LHHS Subcommittee is led by Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Chair, and Tom Cole (R-OK), Ranking Member. The bill included a historic level of funding for the Federal TRIO Programs. Specifically, the bill provides a $100 million funding increase for a total proposed appropriation of $1.16 billion for Fiscal Year 2020 (Program Year 2020-2021). If passed in the final appropriations bill, this would represent the single largest increase in TRIO funding in a single year.
Of course, this is just the first step in a long process. However, this is a very positive sign for the future of TRIO funding. All TRIO supporters — particularly those in Connecticut and Oklahoma — are urged to reach out to the offices of Chairwoman DeLauro and Ranking Member Cole to express their thanks for their leadership and support!
Congratulations on this victory — it is a testament to your hard work and advocacy on behalf of TRIO students and programs.
