October 12, 2017
On October 12, 2017, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of both the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), a Member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Senate Co-Chair of the Congressional TRIO Caucus, sent the attached letter (.pdf) to the Office of the Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Education to express their strong concerns about the continued lack of timeliness in the administration of TRIO grant competitions. In noting the repeated failure of the Department to meet prescribed legislative and regulatory deadlines, the Senators also highlighted the interruption of student services that resulted from such delays. In their letter, Senators Murray and Tester urged the Inspector General to launch an investigation into this matter and propose appropriate remedies to the Secretary and to Congress to prevent such problems from continuing in the future. All TRIO supporters, but particularly those from Washington and Montana, are encouraged to send a word of thanks to Senators Murray and Tester for their strong showing of support.
