First-Generation College Students and Mental Health: Narrative Inquiry Into Help-Seeking, Community Support, and Perseverance

This meaningful conversation sheds light into the ways we can better support first-generation students. Discuss the implications of a qualitative study exploring how first-generation undergraduate students participate in mental health help-seeking. Former Pell Institute intern Pasha Sergeev‘s (they/them) conducted the study to answer these questions: 

  1. What role do families and communities play in the stories of first-generation undergraduate students who seek help with mental health concerns?
  2. How do help-seeking activities and strategies for mental well-being appear among first-generation undergraduate students?
