The 2019 First-Generation College Celebration is almost here! Hundreds of colleges and universities around the nation will be hosting panel discussions, workshops, and campus-wide celebrations to recognize their first-generation students, faculty, and leadership during the week of November 8. As you know, this date marks the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965, which has continued to unlock the door of opportunity for generations of students.
Still not sure how you want to celebrate November 8? Here is a list of 101 ways to celebrate first-generation college students on campus! You might also draw some inspiration from the winners of the grant competition hosted by COE, NASPA’s First-generation Center for Student Success and the Suder Foundation, which awarded 24 institutions grants of up to $500 to assist with their local celebrations. A press release summarizing the winning entries is available here (.pdf).
Already have your plans in place? Be sure to check out our media kit, which includes sharable logos and sample press releases to help publicize your event. Also, be sure to share your plans with us for inclusion on the Center’s round-up of 2019 celebration highlights!
