December 9, 2019
On December 5, 2019, COE co-hosted the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Student Aid Alliance on Capitol Hill. COE President Maureen Hoyler co-chaired the program and COE President Emeritus Arnold Mitchem offered reflections on the early days of the organization. Long-time TRIO Champion Tom Cole (OK-4), who serves as the Ranking Member of the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, kicked off the event by underscoring his own support and reminding attendees of the importance of investing in higher education programs, such as TRIO. Additionally, Representative Marc Veasey (D-TX), who participated in the Texas TRIO Association’s 2018 annual meeting, shared his own experiences as a federal aid recipient and pledged to continue fighting for students.
With 85 member associations, the Student Aid Alliance was formed to ensure that the federal government lives up to the promises of the Higher Education Act of 1965. COE was an original co-founding member and remains a leading partner in the organization.
