2025’s Biggest News Stories, as Told by the Council for Opportunity in Education
In 2025, the future of opportunity for TRIO students was put on the line—and the TRIO community rose to meet the moment. As federal support was threatened and hundreds of life-changing programs faced elimination, COE mobilized students, alumni, and practitioners nationwide to protect access, restore cancelled grants, and defend the services nearly 800,000 students rely on to stay in college and graduate. Because of this collective action, TRIO students continued to receive critical academic support, build leadership skills, access global learning experiences, and see pathways to careers and public service remain within reach. From Capitol Hill to campuses and communities across the country, 2025 proved that when TRIO students are supported, their doors remain open—and their futures move forward.
