COE Warns Education Department’s TRIO Grant Competitions Could Devastate Rural America this Fall, Eliminate College-Access Services in Entire Communities
The Council for Opportunity in Education is warning that the U.S. Department of Education’s proposed Talent Search and Educational Opportunity Center grant competitions could reduce college-access services in rural communities by as much as 90 percent this fall, as large statewide grants risk replacing hundreds of locally operated TRIO projects. COE is urging the Department to rescind, revise, and reissue the competitions to align with congressional intent and protect educational opportunity for students who rely on TRIO programs in underserved communities.
