Former COE Board Member, Brenda Dann-Messier named Rhode Island's Commissioner of Post-Secondary Education

The Rhode Island Board of Education approved the appointment of former COE Board Member, Brenda Dann-Messier, to Rhode Island’s commissioner of post-secondary education Wednesday night.

Dann-Messier is a graduate of Rhode Island College (RIC) and earned her doctorate at Johnson & Wales University. She began her career in higher education at RIC and then went to the Community College of Rhode Island.

Dann-Messier served as president of Dorcas Place Adult and Family Learning Center in Providence. She later was named U.S. assistant secretary of education in the Office of Career, Technical Education and Adult Education under President Barack Obama. In 2013, she was appointed acting U.S. assistant secretary for post-secondary education.
