Congress Averts Shutdown by Passing a Continuing Resolution for Funding Until December
October 2, 2024 — by Owen Toomey
Congress passed a continuing resolution (CR) on Wednesday, September 25 to keep the government funded beyond the end of the Fiscal Year (FY) on Monday, September 30. The President signed the bill into law on the next day. The CR runs until Friday, December 20, by when Congress will have to pass an omnibus appropriations bill for the remainder of FY25 or an additional CR. Congress has recessed until Tuesday, November 12, after the elections.
Between now and then, Members and Senators will be spending time back in their home states to maximize their opportunities to speak to constituents before the November elections. With this in mind, it’s the perfect time to engage with your federal representatives! COE is pushing for the Senate’s $20 million increase to the Federal TRIO Programs budget for FY25, which would be $1.211 billion in total.
COE recommends reaching out now to your Representatives and Senators to plan events where they can visit your programs, meet your students, and learn directly about TRIO. An invitation to an event is a great way to open a dialogue with the office staff and get them thinking about TRIO! There’s no better advocacy than seeing firsthand how TRIO works. Staff lists can be found here. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Director of Congressional Affairs, Owen Toomey, at [email protected].
