At Policy Seminar 2024, Secretary Cardona Calls Education Advocates to Action

“I’ll be honest with you,” Secretary Cardona said. “There’s no one at the Hill that I’ve met that doesn’t support your work. So, as you go out there on the Hill and advocate, bring stories of the students whose lives you’re impacting with you.”

At the COE’s 43rd annual Policy Seminar, U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona gave passion-filled remarks, highlighting the crucial role of TRIO educators and advocates in shaping the future of education in America.

Secretary Cardona began by expressing his gratitude, stating, “Well, first of all, it’s just an honor to be here. I love the energy in the room when I think about the students we serve: They need cheerleaders out there.” He emphasized the importance of providing unwavering support to students, acknowledging the power of encouragement and positivity.

Reflecting on his own journey as a first-generation college student, Secretary Cardona underscored the impact of his experiences on his role as Secretary of Education. He highlighted the significance of understanding and addressing the challenges faced by students from diverse backgrounds: “There’s nothing that I do today as Secretary of Education that is not influenced by my own experience as a first-generation college student and by my wife’s experiences as a first-generation college student.”

Secretary Cardona also emphasized the critical role of advocacy in advancing educational equity, stating, “The work that you do fills in those gaps that our kids need. So they could get a fair shake.” He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives like the Federal TRIO Programs, recognizing their instrumental role in providing opportunities for underrepresented students.

Throughout his conversation with COE President Kimberly Jones, Secretary Cardona emphasized the importance of valuing diversity and multiculturalism in education. He remarked, “I was speaking to students from different countries and having them hear from me that their multiculturalism is one of their greatest assets.” His words reflected a dedication to promoting inclusivity and celebrating each student’s unique strengths.

Despite the challenges faced in education policy, Secretary Cardona expressed unwavering determination to advocate for students and uphold American values. He remarked, “We must double down on our efforts to stand up for students.”

His commitment to advancing equity and opportunity for all students resonated deeply with the audience of over 600 college access and success professionals from across the country, inspiring them to continue their vital work in educational opportunity.

“I’ll be honest with you,” Secretary Cardona said. “There’s no one at the Hill that I’ve met that doesn’t support your work. So, as you go out there on the Hill and advocate, bring stories of the students whose lives you’re impacting with you.”

Secretary Cardona’s remarks at the Seminar on Relations with the U.S. Department of Education underscored the critical importance of advocacy, support, and inclusivity in shaping the future of education in America.

His words served as a powerful call to action, urging educators and advocates to join forces in championing the needs of students and promoting a more equitable educational system.
