This honorary doctorate marks the twelfth honorary degree bestowed upon Dr. Mitchem in recognition of his enduring impact on students and institutions across the country.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) proudly congratulates its President Emeritus, Dr. Arnold Mitchem, on receiving an honorary doctorate degree from Colorado State University, Pueblo on Wednesday, August 20. Interim President Rico Munn presented the degree in recognition of Dr. Mitchem’s distinguished career advancing educational access and opportunity for first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities.

A native of Pueblo and member of Colorado State University, Pueblo’s first graduating class in June 1965, Dr. Mitchem has devoted nearly six decades to expanding college access nationwide. His leadership at COE and within the broader TRIO community has been instrumental in shaping federal policy, nurturing generations of student success programs, and elevating the national conversation about access in higher education. This honorary doctorate marks the twelfth honorary degree bestowed upon Dr. Mitchem in recognition of his enduring impact on students and institutions nationwide.

Kimberly Jones, President of the Council for Opportunity in Education, said, “From Pueblo to the halls of Congress, Dr. Mitchem has been a tireless champion for students whom others too often overlook. This honorary degree is a fitting tribute to a leader whose passion, wisdom, and fierce advocacy have transformed the prospects of countless young people.

Dr. Nate Easley, Vice Chair of the Colorado State University System Board of Governors and longtime friend, reflected, “Dr. Mitchem’s roots in Pueblo shaped a worldview grounded in community, resilience, and service. I’ve watched him turn moral conviction into measurable policy wins, ensuring that federal programs reach the students who need them most. CSU Pueblo honors not just an alumnus, but a son of the city whose example inspires us all.”

Cynthia Ayala, retired TRIO Upward Bound director at Pueblo Community College, added, “Dr. Mitchem’s mentorship changed lives here and across every state where the United States flag flies—students who once walked into Upward Bound unsure of college now lead in classrooms, boardrooms, and community centers. This honorary degree recognizes what we in Pueblo have always known: Dr. Mitchem’s work is love in action.”

Dr. Mitchem’s tenure at COE and his broader advocacy have helped secure resources, policy protections, and a national spotlight for TRIO programs that serve nearly one million students annually. His scholarship, public testimony, and mentorship have mobilized educators, policymakers, and alumni to sustain and expand college access initiatives across urban and rural communities.

COE joins family, friends, colleagues, and the Pueblo community in celebrating this distinguished honor for Dr. Mitchem. To learn more about Dr. Mitchem and the Federal TRIO Programs, visit coenet.org.
